[The Nicaragua Network received the following letter from the Jubilee USA Network (of which we are a member) to be forwarded to our supporters. For more information, visit the Jubilee web page.]

Dear Nicaragua Network,

Last night Timothy Geithner officially became our new Treasury Secretary when the Senate confirmed his appointment. This position has gained new prominence as the global financial crisis deepens. In addition to leading our nation's economic recovery, Secretary Geithner is also charged with shaping our country's international economic policies.

Urge Secretary Geithner to support debt cancellation and other policies that alleviate the impact of the economic crisis on poor people in developing countries! Click here to find out how to tell our new Treasury Secretary "What's on your Heart?"

There are three easy ways you, your community, and your congregation can participate. Visit our website to see all the options:
1. Do it yourself! Just make a heart out of paper and write down what's on your heart - a phrase is fine (ex. "debt cancellation for Haiti" or "stop vulture funds"). Click here for more suggestions. Sign the heart with your name and contact information and send it to us at: Jubilee USA Network / 212 E. Capitol St. NE / Washington, DC 20003
2. Adapt and send a pre-written message through our easy online form.
3. Order special postcards for you and your community to sign by emailing carly@jubileeusa.org.
Make hearts or sign postcards with your neighbors, family, friends, and classmates. Have a heart making party or set up a heart-making table at your school, church or temple. If you have any questions or need suggestions, please call us at 202-546-4470 or send an email to carly@jubileeusa.org.

Thank you for taking action for Jubilee justice!

National Field Organizer

PS - Good News! Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced her support for debt cancellation during her confirmation process. In response to written questions, she wrote:

"President Obama and I each co-sponsored the Jubilee Act in the Senate, and believe that the United States and its G8 partners must complete debt cancellation for all of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC)- a commitment the President made during his campaign. I have been supportive also of expanding the list of HIPC countries, and will urge that the new administration give that full consideration as part of our foreign assistance program."

Secretary Clinton's support is a direct result of your dedication and advocacy. We hope her words encourage you to keep speaking out!
