Support the banana workers affected by the Nemagon pesticide!
Send an automatic email to the Nicaraguan government!
March 2005
Once again, the banana workers in Nicaragua have marched to Managua, setting up camp outside the National Assembly until their demands are heard. Check out the Hotline archives' reports on their march. For background information on the banana workers and the effects of Nemagon, See: Nicaraguan Banana Workers Poisoned by Nemagon - Tell Dow, Shell and Dole to Pay Up!
Go to the Italy-Nicaragua Association to send an automatic email to the Nicaraguan government. Then click "send message." If you wish, you can add your name at the bottom of the scroll down box. The message is sent in Spanish (see below) and Italian. The English translation is as follows:
Once again, thousands of former banana workers are marching to Managua to reclaim their rights and respect for the promises made by the Government and the National Assembly:
- The right of the workers to a life-time pension.
- 227 million Córdobas ($14 million) for medical assistance, which should be included in the country's general budget and designated for the Ministry of Health (MINSA).
- The publication of the Raizón Accord, signed in 2004, and the National Assembly's resolution of November 20, 2002 in the official newspaper, La Gaceta,
so that Law 364 will remain in effect and not be reformed.
We ask the Government and the National Assembly to respect these promises that they made in months past and that they also defend the life and rights of the citizens, seriously affected by the criminal attitude of the transnational banana companies.
