Work Trip to Nicaragua!

Dates: November 9-18, 2013

El Porvenir invites you to share the life and work of a Nicaraguan village!

Make a big difference in the lives of rural Nicaraguans and support self-help water and sanitation projects in rural communities!

This group will travel to El Sauce, and work side-by-side with the villagers in Puente Ocho, building fuel efficient stoves, as part of our watershed rehabilitation program. We will also learn much about the current reality of life in Nicaragua in visits with local leaders.

Traditional wood-burning stoves in rural Nicaraguan households have a devastating effect on the environment and on women's health. Trees are cut down for firewood, and smoke from these stoves causes eye and respiratory infections as well as asthma.

Nicaragua has lost 50% of its forest cover since 1950. Deforestation further exacerbates Nicaragua's water crisis by reducing rainfall, rainwater infiltration and aquifer recharge rates, as well as causing soil erosion and deadly landslides. Indoor air pollution caused by smoky woodburning stoves is as detrimental to health as smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day.

Cost: $1025 includes airport transfers, lodging, meals, in-country transportation, all activity fees, group coordinator and translation services, health/accident insurance as well as project materials, tools, and equipment. Each participant is responsible for his/her own round trip airline ticket, airport taxes, and entry fee ($10, when you land at Managua International Airport).
